Tom Hardy’s Venom 3 crashes summer box office: Release date clash with blockbusters revealed

Written by:

Sony Pictures has set a release date for the third “Venom” movie, starring Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom. The untitled film is scheduled to hit theaters on July 12, 2024, marking the character’s first appearance in the summer movie season. Previously, the first two “Venom” films were released in October.

The release date for “Venom 3” places it in between the openings of Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King” on July 5, 2024, and Universal’s “Twisters” on July 19, 2024.

In addition to “Venom 3,” Sony has announced the release date for the fourth “Bad Boys” movie, reuniting Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. The untitled sequel is set to premiere on June 14, 2024, during Father’s Day weekend, going up against Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2.”

Sony has made significant changes to its release calendar, delaying “Kraven the Hunter” and a “Ghostbusters” sequel to 2024, while removing “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” from the schedule.

“Bad Boys for Life,” the third installment in the “Bad Boys” action franchise, earned $426.5 million worldwide in winter 2020, just before the COVID pandemic impacted theaters. The film’s success led to the announcement of “Bad Boys 4,” directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, with a script by Chris Bremner.

Regarding “Venom 3,” Sony confirmed its development during CinemaCon in 2022. The first “Venom” movie grossed $856 million globally, while “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” earned $502 million, despite the pandemic’s impact. “Let There Be Carnage” opened to $90 million in the U.S., surpassing “Venom’s” $80 million debut in non-pandemic times.

For “Venom 3,” Tom Hardy and collaborator Kelly Marcel have crafted the story, with Marcel stepping into the director’s chair. She previously wrote the scripts for the first two “Venom” films. Fans eagerly await the latest installment in the popular franchise.
