Greta Gerwig’s Barbie soars past $1 billion mark, shattering records for female directors worldwide

Written by:

Greta Gerwig’s film “Barbie” has surpassed $1 billion in global ticket sales in just three weeks, setting a new record for female directors, surpassing Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman.” The Margot Robbie-led movie, which Gerwig directed and co-wrote, has been dominating the box office, reaching $1.03 billion worldwide. It has become the biggest film directed by a woman, surpassing “Wonder Woman.” Although it still trails behind “Frozen” and “Frozen 2,” co-directed by Jennifer Lee, and “Captain Marvel,” co-directed by Anna Boden, “Barbie” has claimed the North American record for live-action movies directed by women.

In the midst of “Barbie’s” success, competing films like “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” and “Meg 2: The Trench” entered the scene. Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” maintained its position in third place but became the highest-grossing R-rated film of the year and the sixth-biggest film of the year overall, surpassing “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.”

The box office has experienced a boom, thanks to movies like “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” but concerns arise as studios face challenges due to the ongoing strike of actors and writers. This has led to delays in the fall release calendar, with some films being pushed to 2024. Sony’s “Gran Turismo” release is one such example, opting for a gradual rollout due to the absence of movie stars to promote the film.
